During the final years of the Cold War, the USA took many steps in the direction of victory through economics. The technology and brains that the US had was unparalleled, and the Soviets found it difficult to keep up with their advances. One of the final economic moves the US made was the explanation of their "newly developed" space shield system. With this, the US made the Soviets believe that they had the technology to defend themselves from space through satellites that were capable of shooting down intercontinental missiles. The Soviets did not have the money to keep up with this "advancement", and were incapable of creating a program that allowed them to synchronize their military and space.
Détente, or a lessening of tension, was the process of events that were used in the Cold War to ease the tension that existed between countries at the time. Several events took place in this plan of easement, but perhaps the most significant was the Helsinki Accords. Among other events such as the signing of a treaty with East Germany, the limiting of the spread of nuclear weapons worldwide, the Helsinki Accords likely created the most significant events. They caused the acceptance of European borders, and thus lessened the tension between the USSR and other Eastern European countries. They demanded the respect of Human rights, specifically in the USSR, and made the movement of people across borders less of a huge deal. This effectively shaped the Human rights that the rest of the world is familiar with today. They changed the inhumane treatment of people in East Europe, creating a less harsh environment and an overall improved living situations for milliion
The USA participated greatly in the Vietnam war. However, their overall participation was not entirely successful. Though they managed to restore peace in the nation, the US had set themselves a goal of finding an honourable way to leave the war. This being said, they effectively shattered this goal by means of destruction and death that took place in Vietnam. The images that made it back home to the citizens of the US made it very clear that they were not conducting themselves peacefully in Vietnam. The reports from soldiers that had participated in the war that were revealed in the years following told horrific renditions of rape and murder that took place on behalf of the Americans. In this sense, the US was not successful in the Vietnam war.
