In the 1920s, the US began to experience many social and political changes that they had never experienced before. Post-war, there was a celebration as those who had returned from war were feeling more alive than ever. Returning home to their families, these veterans only wished to experience life to it's fullest, and began spending their money in ways that the country had never seen before. During this time period, the increase in economic movement brought about changes that would continue to shape our world, even today. It was during this period that the automotive industry became the booming corporation that it is today. Companies like Ford, General Motors and Chrysler were springing up and bringing new products to the market. People were buying new cars with combustion engines, and driving them for the pure pleasure of driving them. These large investments in automobiles were creating more salaries, and thus more jobs. In the long run, it was improving the entire country's economic standpoint on an overall basis.

Franklin Roosevelt made a huge difference during the Great depression. Instead of just sitting back and watching America fall more and more into despair, he decided to make a difference. During the first 100 days of his election he set regulations on the banks so that they would never fail again. He also created new work projects, using the alphabet agencies. They aimed to create jobs while protecting the workers. He took jobs that needed to be done such as the building of the Hoover Dam and created job opportunities. He also used John Keynes economical theories to get the US out of the Great Depression by spending money and helping companies. Which resulted in more jobs. This along with WWII created more jobs and got the US out of the Great Depression. Roosevelt was able to provide over 10000 jobs for Americans.
I believe that the major causes of the stock market crash was an increase in supply, with less of a demand. Post-war, everyone was jumping at the idea to spend their money on new things. As technology increased and was in high demand, more and more new products were put out to the market, until there were too many products to be bought. Eventually, an inevitable point of having more products than were in demand. This created the beginning of what would cause the greatest stock market crash in history. With people buying less products, the jobs that existed previously to produce these things become unnecessary and are no longer required. In this manner, jobs start to disappear, and unemployment becomes an issue. As unemployment increases, there are less people to spend money, and consequently, a cycle of losing jobs and not having enough money to restore the economy that creates more jobs beings. After playing the stock market game it felt disappointing when I calculated how much I lost even though it was just a game. I couldn't even image how it would of felt to of been in that situation in real life in the 30's.
Cinderella Man is a movie from 2005 that illustrates many of the struggles faced by a lot of citizens of the United States during the 1920s and 30s. James Braddock is boxer who is forced to give up boxing after breaking his hand in the ring, seriously crippling the family income and slowly forcing his family into near poverty. Soon, Braddock begins begging for fights, pleading to earn enough money to have the electricity turned back on and to bring home their children, who had recently been sent away to live with their mother's sister, someone who still had electricity and other necessities required to provide a suitable lifestyle for the children. As he slowly begins to find work again, he soon is faced with the daunting task of fighting Baer, who has effectively killed two men in the ring recently. Braddock wins this fight, and the movie ends with he and his family on the slow road to recovery from all the economic turmoil. This movie was an excellent demonstration of the struggles faced by those who lived during these troubling times. It showed the polar opposites between Braddock, who was facing poverty, and Braddock's employers, who were quite well off and living lavishly. |
