Summary
In 1894 and 1895, China lost the Sino-Japanese war. It was during this time that the Europeans create an open door policy. This provoked a nationalist outburst in China, something that would be dubbed the Boxer Rebellion. Following this, the Society of Righteous and Harmonious Fists made attempts to attack all of the foreigners that were inside China at the time. In 1911, Sun Yat Sen led a revolution to rid China of foreigners. He would become the first president of the newly formed Republic of China.
Chiang Kai-Shek became the leader of the Kuomintang in 1925 following Sun Yat Sen's death. This new leader was a communist one, and he installed Mao Zedong as his leader of propaganda. Chiang soon controlled all of the Chinese territory south of the Yangste River.

Subjunctive Question
If Chiang hadn't flexed his political muscles by attacking foreigners in China, would it not have been him that became the leader of this new republic? Would this republic have even been formed?
