Summary
In 1942 at the battle in El Alamein, the British successfully cut the Germans off from the oil and resources in the Middle East. Following this, the Germans were finally defeated in North Africa in 1943. This was the beginning of the end of the war. In the early days of July, 1943, the Allies finally land in Sicily to being the fight against Mussolini. In conjunction with the allies, Italians deposed Mussolini during this Sicily invasion and removed the Fascist Government. However, Hitler managed to move German troops into the country and rescue Mussolini. He also was able to take control of the country during this event. It would be over the next few years that the Italian fascist government was truly defeated. Following the invasion of Sicily, the Allies managed to move across to the Italian mainland in September of 1943, and took Rome by June of 1944. The fighting in this country continued until the second of May in 1943. Mussolini was hanged in April of 1943 alongside his mistress.
