Summary
The Treaty of Versailles had forbade a unification of Germany and Austria. However, the Anschluss, German for connection, took place and Germany occupied and took Austria. After this happened, the British did nothing, warning Germany not to make trouble. Without France to back them up, Britain is afraid to do anything that could cause conflict. Oddly enough, Italy was the only objection. Regardless, Mussolini gave Hitler his approval, as he would continue to support Hitler throughout his regime. This is significant, as Hitler would go to rescue Mussolini later on in history. In addition to this, Hitler threatens to occupy the Sudetenland, and the Europe begins to fear a Second World War. This led to the Munich Agreement, which would be one of the final steps before the war broke out. Here, it was believed that Chamberlain had secured peace for Europe, believing they had prevented the war. However, Hitler continued to move his troops around Europe, making excuses that he was protecting certain areas of German speaking people. In 1939, the Czech people give up their independence and Hitler would add this territory to his regime.
