Summary
The Americans supported a corrupt regime under Fulgencio Batista until the Cuban revolution in 1959. This is when Fidel Castro took over, and he aligned with the soviets. A failed invasion of Cuba during this time took place, the Bay Of Pigs. In 1962, the Soviets begin to put nuclear weapons into Cuba. However, the american spy planes, U2, noticed this. The Crisis took place shortly after this. The US had three options, Diplomatic Solution or Negotiated Settlement, a conventional attack (air and land), or naval blockade. It was Robert Kennedy, attorney general at the time, that convinced the Security Council to go with blockade. The Soviet Ships turn around at the quarantine. 2 letters were sent from Kruschev to Kennedy. The Russians then pull out of Cuba in exchange for a removal of missiles in Turkey at a later date. This resulted in the Partial Test Ban Treaty in 1962, banning any more testing of nuclear weapons.
