Summary
In 1957, the Soviets launched the first Earth-Orbiting satellite. This marvel of technology was called Sputnik. Approximately the size of a basket ball, it only made beeps as it orbited the earth. This frightened the American people, as the beeping could be heard on their radios and other day to day things that they used. Fearing that atomic weapons would soon be delivered without airplanes, the Americans began to enter a serious state of fear. This fear led to an upper hand experienced by the USSR. Realizing this, they began to demand concessions. Shortly afterwards, Inter continental ballistic missiles were developed, along with several forms of delivery systems. These forms of delivery included Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicles, Nuclear Submarines. In response, a mutual destruction assurance was created, meaning that if either party fired a weapon, the other party would fire back. Both countries had Strategic Air Command planes flying 24 hours a day.
