- The Russian Counterattack Fizzled outside of Moscow, but protected the city.-The Germans regrouped and attacked to the north (Leningrad) and to the south (Stalingrad)

- Germany failed in the long run because they were not prepared to fight a winter war
- Germans Attacked Stalingrad because they wanted oil in the Caucasus region

El Alamein
- Bernard Montgomery and his "Desert Rats" fought:
- Rommel and the Afrika Korps (Germans)
- Americans win and this becomes a turning point battle at Al Alamein in 1942 NUTS
- This prevent the Germans from gaining access to the Suez and oil and shows the Germans best troops could be beaten
- Americans join in 1942 under Dwight D. Eisenhower

- Begins in Britain in 1941 before US in war
- Stalingrad was part of this supply route

- Battle of Midway June, 1942 Japanese lose 4 carries to U.S.
- A process of Island Hopping begins in the Pacific (Guadalcanal)
- Battle of Leyte Gulf (Philippines) Oct. 1944 (Largest Naval Battle ever in History) Japanese lose half of their remaining fleet and 4 more carriers (Kamikazes begin)
Summary
Although there were many different turning points in World War II the battle of Stalingrad may have been the biggest turning point in World War II. Another would have to be the Battle of El Alamein. In the Pacific Ocean the Battle of Leyte Gulf was another large and significant battle.
