Summary
McCarthyism took place in the 1950s, when a serious fear of Communism existed throughout the USA. Led by Senator Joseph McCarthy, this idea would rise within the nation. The period of paranoia between 1950 and 1954 was a major cause of this. It became a witchhunt, searching for people that were believed to be communists. It was similar to a witchhunt in the sense that there was very little one could do to prove they weren't a communist if accused. Even if you proved that you weren't, suggestion of guilt of this crime was enough to ruin someone, having them fired etc.
