Summary
Mussolini formed the first Fascist government in Italy in 1923. Throughout his career, he supported Hitler's actions in regards to his fascists movements in Europe. Using blackshirts as a paramilitary force, he comes to power in 1923 after the March on Rome. He is well known for using blackshirts as a paramilitary force during his time in power. The Lateran Accords were what would truly bring Mussolini to power in Italy. Fearing his wrath, Pope Pius XI signed this deal. It gave the Church control over religious education in school, made them the state religion and created the Vatican, an independent country within Rome. In return, the church recognized Mussolini as the legitimate leader of Italy. Being the only remaining powerful force in Italy, the churches recognition of this made Mussolini gain tremendous power.
During the Great Depression, with unemployment high, Hitler would use the attitude of many angry workers to gain a following with his fascist idealism. Hitler provided jobs and promoted other actions that would help the economy recover from the depression. He gained a following through this by providing a light at the end of the tunnel for people to look forward to. It was during this time that Hitler would build his fascist army and begin to re-militarize the country, despite the treaties that prevented this.
