Summary
The formation of NATO took place in 1949. This was in reaction to the Berlin Blockade. They created this organization with a headquarters in Brussels. With this treaty organization, an attack form Russia would be seen as an attack on the entire organization, and thus an attack on multiple countries. However, it proved relatively useless in the long run, acting more as a symbol of national unity than as any true influence on an international level. The organization didn't take their first military action until well after the Cold War in Bosnia in 1994. The formation of the Warsaw pact in 1955 was a Treaty of Friendship, Co-operation and Mutual Assistance. This pact was a reaction to West Germany, having recently remilitarized, joining NATO. This pact, however, dissolved in June of 1991 after the collapse of the former Soviet Union.
